Description
Summary:Depressive symptomology, a very common manifestation of psychological distress, has been extensively researched. Although depressive symptomology research abounds, a limited amount of research has focused on the Mexican American population. In this study, two subgroups of Hispanics, barrio and non-barrio Mexican Americans, were investigated with respect to depressive symptomology from the social support theoretical perspective. The data for this study were obtained from the 1979 National Chicano Survey. In addition, this research provided an opportunity to determine whether depressive symptomology is cushioned among Mexican Americans that live in a barrio by the social support network that exists in this population. This study also addressed the relationship between gender, age, educational and marital status (demographic factors) and depressive symptomology among barrio and non-barrio Mexican Americans. Although there was not a significant difference in depressive symptomology between barrio and non-barrio Mexican Americans, the results did indicate significant difference in demographic factors and social support between barrio and non-barrio Mexican Americans.
