Description
Summary:This study tied traits from the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality to emergent leadership. A total of 160 men were assigned to four-person groups and engaged in a leaderless group discussion task (LGD). Results indicated that extraversion and openness positively predicted emergent leadership, while neuroticism showed a negative relation. Additionally, this study examined whether the strength of the relationship between extraversion, neuroticism, and emergent leadership was moderated by the absence vs. presence of an evaluator. Participants were randomly assigned to either an evaluator-absent or an evaluator-present condition. Social Relations Model analyses revealed that men with higher extraversion scores were rated by other group members as being more leader-like, but only in the evaluator-present condition. Moreover, men with higher extraversion scores reported a desire to lead the group and a desire to voice their opinions to the group, but only in the evaluator-present condition. The relation between neuroticism and emergent leadership, however, was not moderated by the absence vs. presence of an evaluator. The implications of these findings for organizational settings are discussed.
