Description
Summary:The major purpose of this study was to identify factors that motivate teachers to teach in deaf education. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the relationship between the motivational factors of educators to teach in selected oral schools and the factors that motivate educators to teach in selected general public education schools in corresponding areas of the country. The population for this study included 16 oral private schools for the deaf in the U.S.A. Sixteen general education public schools were also selected in proximity to the schools for the deaf. This population generated a sample of approximately 165 oral deaf education teachers and 165 general public education teachers. A questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess motivation to teach in teachers of the hearing impaired and teachers of non-hearing impaired students. The questionnaire was designed to assess teachers' reasons for their decision to pursue a career in education. Inferential statistics were used to indicate differences of motivating factors for teaching in deaf education as compared to reasons for teaching in general public education. Based on the findings of the study, researcher recommendations include: 1. Further study in the field of deaf education is needed to determine if there is a difference between the reasons educators choose to teach in oral deaf education, manual deaf education, or total communication deaf education. 2. Further study should investigate the motivational factors among males to teach in deaf education or general public education. 3. Differences in motivation to teach in oral deaf education and general public education at the secondary level should be compared to identify factors. 4. University departments of education should utilize the motivation factors identified in this study for teacher recruitment. 5. A longitudinal study should be conducted to determine if motivational factors to teach may change for those who stay or leave the field of deaf education and public education.
