Summary:The present study was designed to develop problem-solving activities as a way of screening potentially gifted children for nomination into a pool for formal assessment. These problem-solving activities were based on familiar and real life problems that occur in everyday situations. Third and fourth grade children served as subjects. Their responses to problem-solving activities were assessed using three criteria, i.e., problem-solving ability, reasoning, and imagination /creativity. The reliability of problem-solving activities was supported by the results of interrater reliability and Cronbach's alpha. In analyzing the correlation between problem-solving activities and NNAT, there were significant relationships. The cluster scores of NNAT also had meaningful relationships with each score of the problem-solving activities. In examining the differences of problem-solving activities by gender, girls were more likely to express ideas than boys. There were also significant differences related to grade level, specially on problem-solving activities 2 and 3. There was no difference of problem-solving activities by socioeconomic status. In conclusion, these findings were interpreted to show the potentiality of problem-solving activities as a screening method for the nomination of potentially gifted children into a pool for formal assessment. Future research is recommended to extend these findings for developing ideal screening activities.
