Summary:The purpose of the research was to identify what early training and development initiatives student teachers at Texas A&M University participated in while in high school. The research also investigated whether, and to what extent, these initiatives helped to encourage the student teachers to pursue careers as teachers. Finally, the study looked at what other factors helped the student teachers at Texas A&M University decide to pursue teaching careers. The population for the study was students in the College of Education Student Teacher Program at Texas A&M University. The sample consisted of all students participating in the Student Teacher Program in the Fall 2000 semester under the direct supervision of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture. This excluded student teachers under the direction of Health and Kinesiology and Agricultural Education. The Student Teacher Questionnaire developed by the researcher was designed to collect data from four areas, which included (a) demographic and educational background, (b) teaching interest, (c) early training and development initiatives (e.g., teaching camps, discover teaching days, school district "grow your own'' programs, magnet schools [teaching academies, high school courses, high school clubs), and (d) financial support for aspiring teachers. The significance of this study was based on its potential for helping the State Of Texas identify some of the early training and development initiatives that are in place and working to recruit potential teachers into Texas A&M University. Research endings of this study included: The results from this study confirm that there are factors that may impact the decision of a person to pursue a teaching career. The data indicated that of the 60 students participating in an early training and development activity, 66.7% reported that the activity helped them to decide to pursue careers as teachers. 3. Of the students participating in early training and development activities, 51.7% reported that this participation had a positive effect on their pursuit of a teaching career. 4. Working with children was the overwhelming critical episode, event, activity, or other self-reported factor stated by the student teachers as having the biggest effect on their decisions to pursue careers as teachers.
