Description
Summary:An expansive literature exists indicating the association between parenting practices and the behavioral outcomes of children. There is a body of literature that suggests that parenting practices vary across cultural groups. A controversy exists as to whether ethnicity moderates the relationship between parenting practices and child behavioral outcomes. The present study (a)created theoretically meaningful parenting types supported by cluster analysis in a sample of aggressive and non-aggressive children; (b)examined whether the typology of parents created fit equally well for parents of diverse ethnic backgrounds; and (c)assessed whether ethnicity moderated the relationship between parenting types and childhood aggression. Three types of parents were identified through a k-means analysis. These included parenting types similar to those identified in previous literature. The groups included the authoritative, authoritarian, and the uninvolved parent. As hypothesized, the three parenting groups were equivalent for parents of diverse ethnic background. Cluster groups did not differ on child aggression. Furthermore, no support was found for the hypothesis that ethnicity moderated the relationship between parenting types and childhood aggression.
