Description
Summary:Violence in the public schools is the most important concern in the United States today. This study was designed to determine the factors of violence in the public schools and to measure the perceptions of students who witness violent acts in the public schools. This is the first known instrument which measures the responses of public school age students who were involved in a rehabilitative program where the students were under a court order and restricted by the direction of full-time drill sergeants, teachers, and counselors. In consideration of the student perceptions of violence targeted toward teachers, the current research found that many students believe that their teachers are afraid because of the threats of violence that occur often in the public school. The students stated that there are numerous threats against teachers, and that there were numerous problems in stopping threats of violence and violent students against both teachers and students. The students answered that they themselves were often afraid of the threats and the violent students. But more alarming, the instrument showed that the students were seeing fear in their fellow students as a large number of incidents seem to occur over periods of time in the public schools. The consequences for threats of violence toward teachers and students were reported as very light or nonexistent. Furthermore, there was little confidence in the abilities of teachers and administrators to handle varied violent situations which arise. The trend in the future in regards to violence as seen by the responding students was dim. The students predicted no drops in violence for the immediate future of the public schools, nor a decrease at ten years and beyond. Violence and violent youth in the public schools were seen as a threat to the safety of administrators, teachers and students in American public schools now, and will be a major problem of the future.
