| Summary: | Adult education and literacy teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and the General Educational Development (GED) in Texas must participate in 12 hours of mandatory continuing education per year. There are a variety of avenues available to fulfill this obligation. One of the options is participation in the action research initiative titled Project IDEA. Because this was a new initiative in Texas, the effectiveness of this type of professional development was not known. One measurement of the effectiveness of the program was whether professional needs, as perceived by literacy teachers, were being addressed. This case study was conducted to explore the satisfaction of the literacy teachers who have participated in Project IDEA. This naturalistic inquiry was conducted using two guiding research questions: 1) did participants believe their participation in Project IDEA had improved their professional development, and 2) what was the participant satisfaction with the action research model of professional development? Through the use of the qualitative research method, the feelings of the Project IDEA participants were explored. Data for this inquiry were gathered three ways. First, an initial survey was sent to all Project IDEA participants from 1997 to 1999. Second, semi-structured interviews were conducted with non-respondents to the survey. Finally, field notes, observations and review of the Project IDEA files were utilized to conduct this constant comparative study. Construction of meaning from the data collected gave voice to the rich experiences portrayed by the participants. The data indicated that the participants had an overall satisfaction with Project IDEA. The participants felt that they had expanded their professional horizons and that this model of professional development had effectively met their professional needs. |
