The diffusion of HIV/AIDS in Uganda and the efficacy of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) /

| Summary: | Africa has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in the world (World Health Organization 1998). The rate has been steadily increasing over the past decade, and as of the end of 1997, the rate for adults aged 15-19 was 7.41 per 100,000 (World Health Organization 1998). However, HIV/AIDS prevalence rates have dropped in Uganda approximately five percent between 1993 and 1996 (STD/AIDS Control Program 1997). It has been suggested that The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in Uganda has played a key role in HIV/AIDS education (Mugerwa et al. 1996). This study used statistical and descriptive analyses to: 1) describe where the highest HIV/AIDS rates are in Uganda, 2) investigate the relationship between HIV/AIDS distribution patterns and socio-demographic characteristics of the general population and of TASO clients and 3) correlate patterns of sexual behavior with use of TASO centers. Over the period of 1987 through 1996, the highest HIV/AIDS rates were spatially concentrated in urban areas and the variable "% urban" was consistently the only significant variable when statistically analyzed. Analysis of socio-demographic characteristics found that the high-risk groups among the TASO population appeared to be females in their late twenties, Roman Catholics, and those employed and married. Statistical analysis proved inconclusive as to TASO efficacy, however descriptive analysis of case studies revealed that clients who attended TASO centers for more than 4 visits were no longer sexually active. |
