| Summary: | White-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica) in the southwestern United States are separated into four subspecies based on morphological and behavioral variation. In an effort to uncover genetic diversity among subspecies, sequencing primers for the mitochondrial DNA control region as well as microsatellite primers for the nuclear genome were developed. In total, 1249 base pairs were sequenced in 100 birds. Variation was analyzed across five polymorphic microsatellite loci for 184 birds collected from 33 populations in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Genetic differentiation was evaluated under four scenarios: isolation by distance, current subspecific taxonomy with and without two range expansion areas and an east-west geographic division. Although no substantial genetic subdivision was detected within or among any population grouping for the microsatellite loci, the mitochondrial sequence data showed slight differentiation between eastern and western populations as well as a slight degree of isolation by distance. This could be a relic of former genetic discontinuities that have been largely erased by extensive gene flow due to a massive ongoing range expansion. Larger F-statistics derived from mitochondrial values allowed identification of the source population of the eastern range expansion area as Z. a. asiatica. |
