Description
Summary:Lord Lansdowne's "Peace Letter" of November 29, 1917 is examined with respect to the Marquess' motivation in publishing the letter. Attention is paid to Lansdowne's pre-War political career, as well as his actions during the first years of the War, in order to gain a better basis for assessing the meaning behind his call for a minimum statement of war aims in late 1917. In addition, the paper explores the meaning and purpose that lay behind the issuing of war aims by belligerents. The impact of the "Peace Letter" on Lansdowne's legacy as a statesman forms the conclusion of the work.
