Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine Teen Leadership curriculum's impact on the social skills of students at a selected middle school in Round Rock ISD. A secondary purpose of this study was to collect data that might be used when considering establishment of the course in other middle schools. An extensive review of the literature in regard to self-esteem, social competence, and school safety indicated that the social and emotional needs of students must not be overlooked when designing a comprehensive educational program. Students enrolled in the Teen Leadership course in a selected middle school in Round Rock ISD participated in this study. Data collected from the administration of a modified version of the Texas Social Behavior Inventory and the district's Student Management System were utilized to determine research findings. Research findings of this study included: 1. Students indicated a higher level of self-esteem after instruction through the Teen Leadership curriculum. 2. Students indicated a higher level of social competence after instruction through the Teen Leadership curriculum. 3. The number of discipline referrals for female students enrolled in the course were lower than received by the students the previous semester. 4. Economically disadvantaged female students showed the largest gains in self-esteem and social competence in comparison to other groups after instruction through the Teen Leadership curriculum. Implications from this research include: 1. The Teen Leadership curriculum is beneficial in developing the social skills of middle school students. 2. Educational leaders in Round Rock ISD should contemplate the usage of the Teen Leadership curriculum in other secondary schools within the district. 3. Information in regard to the social and emotional learning needs of students should be made available to all secondary teachers within Round Rock ISD.
