Description
Summary:The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how food mediates social relations at two African-American cafes in Bryan, Texas. To accomplish this goal, this thesis utilizes ethnographic data collected from the methodological perspective of the food event, and theories generated by the cultural meaning approach to the anthropology of food to interpret those data. What emerges is the identification of processes of history and diffusion that inform the relationship between food and social relations at the cafes, and an account of how this relationship is governed by food's ability to mediate high degrees of intimacy that communicate a heritage of perseverance and struggle collectively endured.
