Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the condition of school facilities and student achievement, behavior, attendance, and teacher turnover rate. Building condition was determined by the Total Learning Environment Assessment (TLEA) which was completed by middle school principals in the population. Student data and teacher turnover rate was obtained from the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) which is a Texas statewide reporting system. Student achievement, behavior, attendance, and teacher turnover rate were investigated using t-tests to compare dependent variable means across independent variable categories. The independent categories were the seventeen school facilities (top 25%) with the highest total score compared to the seventeen school facilities (bottom 25%) rated the lowest by total score on the TLEA. Support data was provided by a series of Pearson product-moment correlations in reference to the TLEA Questionnaire. Major research findings of this study included: (1) Student achievement measures were higher in the seventeen middle schools with the highest total score compared to the seventeen school facilities rated the lowest by total score on the TLEA. Four measures of student achievement had significant t-tests (2) The t-tests for student behavior, student attendance, and teacher turnover rate were not significant at the 0.05 level. A review of literature supports the premise that when school facilities are well-designed and maintained, they can enhance the learning environment for students, teachers, and the community. The results of the study identified the need to focus on the match between the purpose of the learning experience and the design of the school facility. Based on the findings of the study, researcher recommendations include: (1) School buildings and classrooms should be designed to accommodate the instructional program. These accommodations include carpeting, being wired and equipped with the latest technology, adequate storage for teachers and student projects, and away from disruptive noises. (2) Administrators should make items such as daily custodial care, maintenance, and needed renovations a priority when planning a district budget.
