|a This study investigated the degree to which the scales of the Personality Inventory for Youth (PIY) and the Youth Self-Report (YSR) reliably distinguish between adjusted and maladjusted female juvenile offenders. Two scales of each instrument predicted criterion measures (number and severity of disciplinary tickets and number of incident reports). The scales were examined to determine cutting points at which the chance of the criterion measure being obtained by an offender during the first three months of incarceration was higher than base-rate. The ability of each instrument to classify offenders into security levels was investigated. Each instrument produced one function that discriminated maximum and medium security from minimum security. The YSR was able to correctly classify 73% of offenders into minimum or medium/maximum security groups, and the PIY was able to correctly classify 79%. The PIY was also able to discriminate maximum from a combination of minimum and medium security level offenders and was able to correctly classify 86% of offenders into the two groups.
