| Summary: | This qualitative study focused on the female faculty perceptions of the organizational culture at a major research institution. Eight research questions that focused on the prevailing organizational culture of the institution were studied: the value afforded teaching, research, and service; the respect and support of female faculty; the use of knowledge and experience to facilitate change in the institution; the hopes and expectations of female faculty for the future; the impact of female students in the classroom; and a memorable semester from a positive and from a negative perspective. To achieve the objectives of this research, a qualitative research methodology was used to collect and report the data. A list of female faculty who met the criteria of tenured or tenure-track appointments, with responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research, and service, below the rank of department head, and employed in one of the 10 academic colleges was established for the study. The actual questionnaire was distributed via electronic mail (email) and was returned by the same medium. The research findings were organized in three sections. First, demographic data was arranged for ease of reading; second, a descriptive response to a research question was provided; and third, findings derived from the data organized in relation to the eight research questions was presented. The overarching theme of the research describes the female faculty perceptions of the organizational culture at this major research institution to be patriarchal, military-based, and supportive of little recognition or advancement for women. |
