| Summary: | This meta-analysis (73 studies, N=154,274) estimated effects of the impact of psychological interventions on medical costs, medical utilization, and work absenteeism for specific mental health diagnoses and medical conditions. Small but significant effects were estimated for a broad range of psychological interventions. Effect estimates were significant but mostly small to medium in magnitude. Larger effects were associated with fully integrated care, where point of delivery and payment for services were the same for mental health and medical care, than with less integrated treatment. Mental health interventions with medical patients in medical settings were associated with larger effects than traditional services for individuals with more severe mental health diagnoses. Interventions delivered to high functioning, non-distressed individuals in worksite settings had significant effects as well. Adoption of a cost-utility analysis to better capture the clinical and financial impact of psychological interventions is advocated. Recommendations are made about directions for clinical practice in light of the current findings. |
