Description
Summary:The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of selected variables, specifically extracurricular activity involvement, on student success for the graduating classes of 1998, 1999, and 2000 at a rural high school in East Texas. The population for the study consisted of 362 students enrolled in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes during the spring semester, 1998, at the local high school in East Texas. The permanent records of all 362 students were reviewed to evaluate the variables that contributed to success in school with regard to TAAS scores, attendance rates, and discipline referrals. Data collected from 362 students was used in conjunction with descriptive and correlational statistics and hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis Model. The analysis of data reported that many of the factors were important variables in predicting student success in high school. The local school administrators should consider developing policy to include intervention of extracurricular activities for at-risk students at the high school level. Further study should be done to determine the extent to which individual factors determine success in high school.
