Description
Summary:This study analyzed a secondary data set compiled by the Adolescent Tobacco Use Awareness and Cessation Program (ATCP) in Texas. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between six-month smoking quit attempts and self-efficacy among adolescents. Bandura's operational definition of self-efficacy was used throughout the study. The final sample size was 616 and consisted of adolescents aged twelve to eighteen. Self-efficacy was significantly correlated with six-month quit attempts and the number of cigarettes smoked per day. Adolescents who had a greater number of quit attempts were found to have higher levels of self-efficacy. There was a significant inverse relationship between age and six-month quit attempts. As age increased the number of quit attempts decreased. Age and sex were not found to be predictive of six-month quit attempts. Recommendations based on this study include the need to reexamine the construct of self-efficacy in the context of addictive behaviors among adolescents. Quit attempts also need to be clearly defined and quantifiable. It is also recommended that self-efficacy be measured at each quit attempt to obtain more information.
