520 |a The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of a certificate training program in dental hygiene that used a competency-based curriculum model for instructional design and student assessment. The outcomes of the program were evaluated from the perspective of two of the most important stakeholders of the program's training product, the alumni and their employers. Additionally, this study provided information that may be used to improve the quality and effectiveness of the program. The data were collected by using a self-administered questionnaire that was created from the 57 competencies that have been developed and used by the faculty. It was administered to a population of 114 alumni from the four classes that have experienced the CBE curriculum. The alumni were asked to identify their employers, and a similar questionnaire was sent to 50 employers to obtain parallel data for comparison. All respondents were asked to rate the 57 competencies in terms of perceived preparation and perceived importance to daily practice. The response rates to the survey were 70.2% for the alumni and 52% for the employers. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to characterize and compare the data between the two groups. A constant-comparative qualitative analysis was also completed on comments and answers to open-ended questions. The conclusions of this evaluation project were that the alumni were perceived as well prepared on the competencies of this program, and the competencies were all considered important or essential to daily practice by both groups. There was a high degree of agreement between the groups on the preparation and importance of the competencies. Both groups were concerned about the practice and clinical management competencies that have a direct impact on the human relation atmosphere and financial productivity of the private practice. It was recommended that longitudinal studies of the alumni be considered to supplement this study, as well as using qualitative studies to potentially identify findings that this method of evaluation may have overlooked. The findings, conclusions, and recommendations have been presented to the faculty and administration for inclusion in ongoing curriculum reviews.
