| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to identify the perceived barriers and motivations that relate to participation in post-secondary education by currently enrolled first-generation male and female Hispanic students. A questionnaire was used for gathering information. Part I of the survey instrument consisted of the 1982 revised version of Boshier's Education Participation Scale (EPS). In Part II, first-generation Hispanic male and female students currently participating in post-secondary education were asked to describe the extent to which 19 selected barriers to participation might affect continuing their education. This study was an attempt to provide educational leaders with information about the perspectives of male and female Hispanic post-secondary education students as these perspectives relate to their perceived motivational influences and barriers to participation in the educational process. Several major conclusions were derived from the findings generated by testing the research hypotheses formulated to guide this study. The factors found to be significant predictors of motivation orientation were ranked exactly the same for males as well as female Hispanic students. Individual barriers ranked by both males and females were ranked differently. |
