| Summary: | Porous medium phenomenology has importance in many scientific and technological activities, especially in petroleum and gas reservoir engineering, catalyst science, groundwater engineering, filtration science and geology. Even with decades of research trying to understand the phenomenology of porous media, an important number of fundamental questions have remained opened. For instance, what is the appropriate conception of the geometry of porous media, and what are the correct relationships between the pore structure and the macroscopic properties? Also, what is the physical meaning of the flow models such as the Darcy and Forchheimer approaches? The answer of these and other important questions will provide bases for a more appropriate description of porous medium phenomenology, and also to develop better technologies and methodologies related with the use and applications of porous media. The objective of this work is to provide a fundamental description of porous medium phenomenology. A new structural model of porous media has been developed. A new property, hydraulic porosity has been defined. Among the findings of this work, the physical basis of Darcy's law and flow at high velocities are presented, and relationships among macroscopic properties are theoretically derived. |
