| Summary: | After decades of research devoted to the relationship between job satisfaction and job performance, this study investigated how that relationship is impacted by the recent distinction between task and contextual performance. A stronger relationship between contextual performance and job satisfaction was hypothesized. Five hundred and twenty-six participants from a manufacturing plant rated their facet and overall job satisfaction, while their supervisors rated their (i.e., participants') task, contextual, and overall performance. The results showed the satisfaction-task performance relationship (r = .15) to be the same as the satisfaction-contextual performance relationship (r = .15). These effects were similar to those reported in the extant satisfaction-performance literature (i.e., r = .14). The supervisor ratings did not support a clear distinction between task and contextual performance. The conceptualization of job performance and the future of its relationship with job satisfaction are discussed. |
