Description
Summary:The focus of this paper is a cotton variety study conducted in Williamson County. The varieties were planted in 38-in (96.52 cm) rows on 9 April 1998. Tie varieties were evaluated near Ballet, north of Taylor, Texas. Varieties included AgriPro (AP) 6101, AP 7115, Delta Pine (DP) 338, DP 5690 roundup ready (RR), FiberMax (FM) 819, FM 832, MAX 9, Paymaster (PM) 1730 Boll guard (BG), PM 1560 BG, Stoneville (SV) 373, SV 474, Sphinx Suregrow (SG) 125, Terra C-40, and Terra 292. Each plot consisted of six 250-ft (76.2-m) long rows with one replication per variety. The total area for each variety was approximately 0.12 acre (0.05 hectare). Plant mapping was conducted three times during the growing seen to evaluate cotton growth characteristics. Results from plant mapping showed (SV) 373 was the shortest variety on 15 June 1998, 16.4 inches, and was the only variety with no ells. Sphinx had the highest fruit retention with 91.7 % at the first and second positions on 15 June 1998. At the final plant mapping on 16 July 1998, the variety with the highest fruit retention was AP 6101 with 55.4 %. After harvesting yield, micro-ire, fiber length, fiber strength, leaf grade, color wade, and loan value were determined. The highest yielding varieties were Paymaster 1330, with 483 pounds of lint per acre, and MAX 9, with 441 pounds of lint per acre. The varieties with the highest loan value were AP 7115, 0.4775 cents per pound of lint, and SG 125, 0.4685 cents per mend of lint. Three of the best cotton varieties were chosen from this variety study for farming in Central Texas based on growth characteristics, fiber characteristics, yield, and loan value. The cotton varieties AP 7115 and SG 125 were chosen because of their loan value and growth characteristics and Max 9 because of its growth characteristics.
