Description
Summary:The microscopic electronic and magnetic properties of Fe[]VAI have been studied via []Al and []V NMR at temperatures between 4 and 550 K. This material has been a subject of current interest due to indications of possible heavy fermion behavior. The results of Knight shifts as well as spin lattice relaxation rates reveal a pseudpgap in Fe[]VAI with a smite number of carriers around the Fermi-level in the density of states, in agreement with band structure calculations. An investigation on non-stoichiomctric Fe[]V[]Al further provides insight into how the pseudogap feature and magnetic response are mailed when V is replaced by Fe or vice-versa. For the magnetic of Fe[]VAI, convincing evidence supporting the magnetic cluster picture is found from the NMR, susceptibility, and magnetization measurements. I also performed field-dependent specific heat experiments on Fe[]VAI between 0.6 and 8 K. I discovered a Schottky anomaly in specific heats which leads to false heavy fermion behavior. In addition, the inherent electronic specific heat is observed to be small, but the corresponding electronic mass enhancement is moderate, apparently enhanced by electron-electron interactions.
