Description
Summary:Two kinds of envy are proposed and models of each are testes. R. H. Smith's resentment model is held to be an adequate account of luck envy, or envy directed toward persons whose advantages seem unrelated o effort. Luck envy is proposed to be a kind of anger at the unfairness of another's undeserved good luck. The humiliation envy, or envy directed toward effortful achievers. Merit envy is proposed to be a kind of shame based anger at those who seem to deserve their greater success. Relationships between envy types, envy-related traits, and envy schemes are investigated in merit vs. luck conditions. Evidence is found supporting the existence of different envy types and the relatively closer connection between merit envy and envy-related dispositions and schemas.
