Description
Summary:Two studies investigated self-related motives for identifying with groups. Individual social comparisons and group-based social comparisons are identified as two processes through which people identify with groups to elevate their self-concept. Individual downward social comparisons within a group should lead to positive self-affect and more identification with the coup. Group-based comparisons allow members of a high status group to feel better and should also result in increased identification. Context (intragroup for individual comparisons or intergroup for group-based comparisons) should determine which of these two processes should be more impactful on identification. Study 1 showed some evidence that individual performance feedback affected participants' self- concepts in intragroup, but not intergroup, contexts. Study 2 did not document the predicted results: Individual performance impacted self-affect, but group-based comparisons showed little impact on self-feelings, and context did not influence results as expected.
