| Summary: | IDEF3 is an integrated definition (IDEF) method for process description capture. IDEF3 plays an important role in the design and analysis of manufacturing systems because it can represent a target system through activities and temporal and logical relations of activities. This representational framework provides designers and analysts a perspective for modeling a particular system of interest. This is the first research that attempts to integrate IDEF3 with quantitative modeling methods, such as queueing network analysis and project evaluation and review technique (PERT). Through this research, the feasibility and detailed schema of the integration of IDEF3 with quantitative modeling tools are presented and implemented. A "general open queueing network'' (GOQN) is an IDEF3 template, which can then be used to model the behavior of a target system. Templates are associated with a "unit of behavior'' (UOB) in IDEF3, and this association results in a "network of templates'' to which a parametric decomposition approach (PDA) is applied to obtain performance measures of interest. Simulation was used to test the validity of this integration. Integration software was developed to integrate IDEF3 with GOQN's. The integration of IDEF3 with PERT network was suggested as future studies and its related issues were presented to calculate the critical paths with validation exercises. |
