Description
Summary:Part of a series of 10 videos (25 programs) on music for young people, presented by Leonard Bernstein. In "What makes music symphonic?" (60 min.), Leonard Bernstein demonstrates with variations on a theme, sequences, imitations, counterpoints, augmentation, diminution, and accompaniment how a composer develops the sounds and ideas that produce a symphony. Includes excerpts from symphonies by Mozart (41st), Beethoven (3rd), Tchaikovsky (4th), Haydn (104th), and Brahms (2nd).
In "What is classical music?" (59 min.), Bernstein says "classical" music is really the music of 18th century Europe, which was formulated by Bach and Handel in a strict, almost mathematical style. Later, Haydn and Mozart changed the formula to add grace and elegance. Still later came Beethoven, a genius who broke all the rules and ushered in the Romantic period. Includes "Egmont" Overture (Beethoven) and Overture to the Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), plus excerpts from Symphony no. 102 (Haydn), Symphony no. 40 (Mozart), Brandenburg Concerto no. 4 (Bach), Water Music (Handel), and Piano Concerto no. 21 (Mozart).
