| Summary: | The selection of control for a diamond interchange is based upon many factors, including the geometry of the interchange, the current traffic patterns, and expected traffic patterns. Each possible control plan for an interchange is more applicable in certain situations, and no plan is best for all situations. Strategies, or goals, can be developed based upon the situation which assist in selecting the most appropriate control plan. An expert system developed to establish these goals is the focus of this research. Initially, knowledge on traffic control strategies was acquired through traffic engineer interviews and paper studies. An architecture for the strategic level of a diamond interchange control expert system was developed, and a prototype was implemented. To evaluate the prototype, typical scenarios in which each control plan would be desired were developed and evaluated. The results of the prototype traffic plan selections, as well as an explanation of the architecture and the traffic knowledge gained during this research is presented. |
