|a This study is focused on determining single and multiple pulse ED₅₀ for laser pulses of 200 ns duration. Energy thresholds in this experiment were determined on an artificial retina, for a variety of pulse widths and spot sizes. Due to numerous biological processes occurring within the eye, threshold values are difficult to ascertain. In an effort to eliminate the biological component a piece of exposed camera film was used as the artificial retina. Presently there are no safety standards that specify allowable exposure for pulses shorter than 1 nanosecond in duration, but current safety standards provide for a decrease in the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) per pulse for exposure to repetitive pulse laser irradiation. The degree of decrease for pulses of duration less than 10 []s can be determined by multiplying the single pulse MPE by a correction factor, C. An empirical relationship has been derived which equates the ED₅₀/pulse in a pulse train to the ED₅₀ for a single pulse and the member of pulses in the pulse train.
