| Summary: | The IS-95A reverse link CDMA system is analyzed from a channel coding point of view. Analytical performance is derived for the Viterbi decoder to perform hard decision decoding. A dual-max decoding metric is suggested to provide soft information to the Viterbi decoder to improve performance. Then a new scheme by replacing the convolutional encoder/Viterbi decoder with an equal rate Reed-Solomon (RS) code is investigated. Two different RS codes are analyzed. One of them is a concatenation of two RS codes and the other is single RS code. After finding analytical performance expressions, simulations were run in AWGN and fading channels and also in a multiple access AWGN channel. Finally, performance of the systems with the RS codes is improved substantially with erasure decoding and a new scheme using a simple (63.21) RS code with erasure decoding is achieved which performs as good as the IS-95A in AWGN and better in the fading channel. |
