Summary:To mitigate the negative effects of guajillo (Acacia berlandieri) on goat nutrition three experiments were conducted. First, to determine the negative effects of feeding guajillo, four alfalfa (Medicago sativa) based diets containing 0, 25, 50 and 75% of guajillo were fed to Angora goats in a trial. Guajillo level had no effect (P>0.05) on intake. Water intake and urine output decreased (P<0.05) with increasing level of guajillo. The digestibility of all the nutrients decreased (P<0.05) with increasing level of guajillo. Energy balance and nitrogen balance decreased with increasing level of guajillo. Amine concentrations increased with increasing level of guajillo. Increasing ADF-N and tannins with increasing level of guajillo explains the lower availability of N. Higher glucuronic acid output in goats fed a 75% guajillo diet indicates a detoxification mechanism for reducing the toxic effects of ingesting guajillo. Second, to determine the characteristics eliciting a proportional choice among the 4 diets, Angora goats were fed 250 g of each diet for 9 days in a ''cafeteria'' trial. Total DMI was similar to the results of the first experiment. However, intakes of particular diets decreased with increasing levels of guajillo. Although none of the diets appeared to be acutely toxic, the goats preferred the diets lower in guajillo. Third, the effects of supplements and monensin on goats fed a basal diet of 50% guajillo: 50% alfalfa hay were determined through a feeding trial and a subsequent metabolism trial. Feed intake was not affected (P>0.05) by the supplements and monensin. Supplementation increased (P=0.09) ADG. Addition of monensin to the supplement increased ADG (P=0.018) and increased feed conversion efficiency (P=0.07) Treatment had no effect measurable (P<0.20) on horn growth and tibia growth. Blood urea nitrogen and triglycerides were not affected by the treatment, however, triiodothyronine and thyroxine decreased unsupplemented goats. Supplementation improved the digestibility of DM, NDF, N and energy and N balance. Monensin addition improved N digestibility. The increased ADG of goats supplemented with protein, energy or monensin can be explained by the improvement in nitrogen digestibility and the biological effects of feeding monensin.
