Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to develop basic information concerning the level of leadership skills found in recognized student leaders who have graduated from a major land grant university. To improve leadership education and to evaluate how well a major land grant university is meeting its mission of leadership development is also an objective of the study. Ultimately this study will detect if recognized student leaders who have graduated are transferring their leadership experiences and skills to the post college experience. A correlational design was used for this study. The population for this study consisted of graduates of a major land grant university who indicated they were student leaders during college. One sample was a group of 200 award leaders who graduated between the years of 1982 and 1992. The other was a group of 400 non-award leaders who graduated between the years of 1982 and 1992. The Agricultural Leadership Education Team of the Department of Agricultural Education at a major land grant university designed the leadership questionnaire that was mailed out with a cover letter explaining the details of the study. The study found that there are skills being learned through the college experience that are not being transferred to the post-college experience. However, there was no difference between leadership skills used after college by award and non-award leaders. The following recommendations for action were based on the findings and conclusions of this study. Colleges should promote leadership opportunities to everyone and educate the students on the importance of leadership skills. Some collegiate leadership opportunities need to differentiate between group-centered and leader-centered approaches. Collegiate leadership opportunities need to prepare students for the transition from college to post-college leadership reality.
