Summary:Relationships of taxa classified in the genus Setaria subgenus Paurochaetium were investigated. Identifying characters used by previous authors contained inconsistencies that led to potential misidentification of the talon. Objectives were to 1) determine the relationships of tea in the Texas/Mexico/Oklahoma/New Mexico complex and 2) provide a taxonomic treatment of all tea recognized by Rominger (1962) in the subgenus Paurochaetium including Setaria variifolia. Study of the tea revealed the presence of two subgenera, Paurochaetium and Reverchonia. Subgenus Paurochaetium comprises seven of the primarily West Indian taxa originally classified by Rominger. Subgenus Reverchonia (4 taxa) comprises the remainder of the taxa classified by Rominger and is made up of the western complex originally classified within Paurochaetium. Subgenus Reverchonia includes Setaria variifolia that was not included by Rominger in his treatment of North American Setaria. Setaria subspecies Reverchonia has been described as a new subgenus. Three subspecies have been classified within Reverchonia. Three taxa within subgenus Paurochaetium have been classified at the variety level.
