| Summary: | Methods developed to estimate the position of the rotor in surface mount permanent magnet synchronous motors depend on the motor parameters such as the stator resistance and inductance. The variation of these parameters cause significant errors in the position estimation. The back emf detection methods also fail at low speeds since the induced EMF is low and is buried in the noise caused by the PWM switching of the inverter. At low speeds the resistive drop, is significant compared to the inductive drop and errors in the value of this parameter cause significant errors in the position estimation. To improve the position estimation of the current schemes a method is proposed to reduce/remove the elect of stator resistance and inductance in the position estimation. A surface mount permanent magnet synchronous motor wound with a double layer lap winding on the stator with taps on the windings is used. The position estimation method is based on the idea of flux estimation in a split phase motor. The motor used for the experiments is modeled based on this concept and the position estimation scheme is implemented. The coil voltages measured from the taps provided are used to estimate the induced EMF, which in turn gives us the instantaneous rotor position. Results obtained at 0.5 Hz to 3 Hz fundamental stator frequency show improved performance. |
