| Summary: | Two hundred ninety-do male undergraduate students from two universities were assessed with regard to their evolvement in sexually coercive/aggressive behaviors and their level of moral development in an effort to determine if a relationship exists between these two constructs. Moral development was expanded beyond moral judgment to include moral character also. The instruments used in this study included the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES), the Defining Issues Test (DIT), the Hogan Personality Inventor (HPI), the Independence Subscale of the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (SAS), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (M-C SDS). Reliability analyses were performed on each of these instruments, and validity analyses were conducted on the SES, including a factor analysis of the SES. Eighteen percent of the male participants reported having used some type of verbal pressure to obtain sex with a woman. However, very few other coercive or aggressive behaviors were reported by this sample. Discussions are provided with regard to the rather low incidence rates in this study, as well as about the relationship between sexual aggression/coercion and moral development. The concept of moral development as a more complex construct than simply moral judgment is also supported. Finally, because this investigation was exploratory in nature, there were some methodological difficulties. These problems are addressed in peat detail in an effort to aid future researchers who may want to conduct investigations in similar areas. |
