Description
Summary:A requirement for the Master of Agriculture program at 08 and index.
Texas A&M University is the writing of a professional paper based on the internship. My internship was in horticultural therapy at Casa Colina, a rehabilitation facility in Pomona, California at Casa Colina. I assisted the therapists, called Job Coaches, with their programs in propagation, landscaping, and plant grooming. I worked with people whose disabilities ranged from head injury and mental retardation to Cerebral Palsy. The horticultural therapy program at Casa Colina included activities on the grounds of, California Polytechnic State University at Pomona, where the main facility was located, and activities at off-campus sites including the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum. The horticultural therapy program at Casa Colina provides many services to its clients including vocational training, and assistance with job application procedures, community education, and job placement. Clients receive a chance for independence, preparation for the working world, and gain self- respect by doing work that has visible, tactical results. This work gives them an opportunity to earn money, and in so doing, the participants learn to race challenges and succeed beyond a traditional work setting. The internship provided me with several opportunities to practice horticultural therapy principles which I learned during my course-work. I realized that horticultural therapy is most efficient when the therapist is able to look beyond a person's disability and see what the person is able to do.
