Summary:The purpose of this research was to identify the Microfilm Inc. critical issues facing intercollegiate athletics at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1-A level by the year 2012 which may lead to reforms in intercollegiate athletics. The secondary purpose was to identify the likelihood of occurrence of such issues and their desirability and perceived impact on the reforming of intercollegiate athletics. A Delphi panel of 15 Division I-A Athletic Directors was selected to participate in the study. Through a series of five questionnaires, the panel moved toward consensus on thirty-one critical issues falling into eight broad categories: Funding Issues, NCAA, Bowl Games versus Playoffs, Amateurism, Academics, Gender Equity, Facilities, and Student-Athlete Issues. The expert panel was asked to project future occurrences and forecasts according to likelihood of occurrence, desirability, impact. A11 data was analyzed according the median. The interquartile range, representing those answers and 75th percentiles, was calculated after Rounds Three and Four. interquartile range was used determine the level consensus a forecast as well identify those panelists who were not in consensus. Those members who were unable to move toward consensus were asked to write a minority report. A complete summary of all tasks provided in the appendices including the frequency distributions of responses, interquartile ranges, and minority reports. Twenty-three critical issues were forecasted to have a greater than 41% chance occurring before year 2012. Fourteen issues were forecasted to be b0th desirable or greater and would impact an athletic program. Those tasks which reached consensus and were identified as having a better than average We prepared a series for advanced knowledge by athletic directors those areas.
