| Summary: | An application of a combination of three diagnostic crofilm Inc. approaches used elsewhere to evaluate nutrient deficiencies and growth response of managed stands of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) to fertilization was used on two soil groups classified as poorly drained and moderately well drained in Southeast Texas. The technique was based on an identification of nutrient deficiencies and involved the simultaneous comparisons of the screening trial results to the conventional volume growth responses. In preliminary diagnoses, the critical level approach identified N as the most limiting growth factor, the DRIS identified P as the most limiting favor, and the vector analysis identified N and P as factors limiting loblolly pine growth. The technique was therefore tested with volume growth response data in conventional trials, and correct diagnosis rates of individual diagnostic techniques were ranked according to potential responsiveness to fertilizer addition. The specific volume growth response followed the same trends as for the volume growth response to individual nutrient application and the volume response means did not differ significantly. Soils characteristics affected tree growth and response to fertilization. Two- year volume growth showed a slight positive response to treatment on poorly drained soils and a lack of response to treatment on well drained soils. On sites with adequate moisture, small responses were obtained from an application of N and sometimes P alone. The probability and magnitude of growth response to fertilization varied from site to site. Whether the response was to N addition, P addition, or the two added in combination was site-dependent. The DRIS method was most effective for identifying P responsive sites, while the vector analysis approach was most effective for identifying N responsive sites. The results suggested there is considerable variation in the diagnostic approaches, and that greater diagnostic accuracy would be obtained in considering the diagnostic results of the three approaches, The results also showed that chants of securing maximum or potential stand productivity are enhanced with greater nutritional balance. To justify the use of fertilizer on an operational basis: responses must not only be statistically significant, but also be economically attractive. |
