| Summary: | This research highlights labor market outcomes of Mexican American women. Much of the existing research on labor force patterns of minorities, including Mexican Americans, has neglected women. Given the explosive demographic growth of the Mexican American population, Mexican American women's wages is noted as an important sociological topic of study. To increase the sociological understanding of wages among Mexican American women in particular regions of the United States, a theoretically based empirical analysis was conducted. Research has documented that minority workers are penalized for their ascribed racial and ethnic status as minority workers continue to face inequities in their labor market endings. Using data from the 1990 Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS), the analysis identified the significant determinants of hourly wages for Mexican American women residing in Southwest enclave regions. For comparative purposes, the same analyses were conducted for Anglo and African American women. This research established the significant relationship between Southwest enclave residence and wages of Mexican American women. A final exercise examined the ''cost of being a minority worker'' for Mexican American women within a geographic context. The findings of this research have practical applications and implications for policy makers and others interested in the social and economic conditions of minorities. |
