520 |a The objective of this study was to develop an ity Microfilm Inc. understanding of how women with learning disabilities come to terms with their learning disabilities. Specifically, the aim was to answer two questions: (1) How do women community college students with learning disabilities come to understand themselves and make sense of their learning disabilities? and (2) how do their perceptions of their learning disabilities interconnect with the support services offered at their postsecondary institutions? In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of eight women, all of whom had been diagnosed with learning disabilities. Seven of the eight women were currently enrolled in community colleges and one had transferred, in the last six months, from a community college to a local university to continue her education. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method, which resulted in a complex understanding of how these women came to understand themselves and to make sense of their learning disabilities. This study's first finding was that women with learning disabilities who are functioning successfully within the community college are characterized by a strong sense of personal resiliency. This resiliency consists of a conscious set of decisions followed by a translation of those decisions into actions. The second finding dealt with reframing of the learning disability experience. When discussing the impact of a learning disability in their lives, these women viewed their learning disability as just defining aspect. In fact, their learning disabilities became a visible concern to them only within a formal learning environment. In the last finding, the participants had a holistic view of the support services in their lives. The support systems which each of the participants identified as pad of a much larger support network included disabled student services, family, friends, religious affiliations, and various social services.
