Description
Summary:Timber cruising is used by many forest products
companies to gather inventory data on their land
holdings. This data may be gathered for the purposes
of management planning, valuation, or in preparation
for timber sales. International Paper Company, loc.
routinely uses timber cruises to gather information on
the volumes of standing timber within their stands in
order to calculate the expected value of the timber on
their lands prior to harvest. Although the methods
used by International Paper Company are modified to
suit the specific needs of their company, most of the
techniques are the same as those used by the rest of
the forestry industry. The purpose of this
professional paper is to describe the specific timber
rising methods used during a professional internship
with International Paper Company. Additionally, since
the goal of the internship was to help prepare timber
sale proposals, part of the paper is dedicated to
describing the proposal-icing process and evaluating
aspects of International Paper's harvesting practices.
