| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze elopment ". the major factors that facilitate or impede the integration of technology education into general education in a developing nation, with particular reference to Nigerian secondary schools. A survey research method was used to collect data from secondary school administrators (principals) and technology education teachers. A three-part questionnaire of 1 14 structured-item questions and one open-ended question was developed to measure the extent of agreement of the administrators and teachers regarding their perceptions of (1) philosophical objectives, (2) factors that facilitate or impede the integration of technology education, and (3) the future direction of technology education in Nigerian secondary schools. Descriptive and comparative analyses were used to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to extract possible factors from the responses of the participants to the questionnaire. The open-ended question was qualitatively analyzed to show the patterns of the participants' responses. The results showed convincing evidence that technology education has been integrated into Nigerian secondary schools, and there is consistent agreement on the categories into which extracted factors fall. The factors related to the philosophical objectives of technology education are intellectual development, technical skills, career development, and technological literacy. Factors facilitating the integration of technology education into general education are program quality, curriculum and instruction, program outcome, government policy, and program content. Factors impeding the integration of technology education into general education are facilities and equipment, program image, curriculum and instruction, teacher shortages, administration, and teacher quality. Factors related to the future direction of technology education in Nigerian secondary schools are curriculum development, public relations, technological literacy, intellectual development, and societal concern. The main problems confronting technology education in Nigerian secondary schools include teacher shortages, low teacher salaries, poor quality facilities and equipment, scarcity of relevant teaching materials, lack of community involvement, and inadequate guiding policy. The results of this study provide essential information about the integration of technology education into general education in a developing nation, Nigeria. They also yield information that could be used to resolve some of the noted problems confronting the adaptation of technology education in Nigerian secondary schools. |
