Summary:In this thesis, three steps were conducted to determine the IDA characteristics, determine base case building characteristics, and conduct computer simulation comparisons. Through literature review and case studies, the general energy use patterns in office buildings and energy conservation factors were determined as parameters as input data. In terms of energy use patterns, heat gain from light, equipment and window solar was the major cooling load, and infiltration and ventilation were the largest factor in affecting the heating load in office buildings. In terms of energy conservation factors, control of daylight, solar heat gain, ventilation, and artificial lighting were determined as the largest potential options. Then, the characteristics of the base case were determined as the "baseline'' for an hourly building simulation model. These are based on ASHRAE Standard 90. 1-89 and CBECS data. in each different climatic zone analyzed (ENER-WIN). The comparison of base-case and IDA outputs was made in terms of annual energy consumption. peak heating and cooling loads, incremental costs, and operating costs within 12 cities. This thesis addressed the results from computer simulation pragmatically examining energy efficient measures' effects OD building energy use and cost benefits. The largest cost-benefits came from the reduced HVAC equipment first costs and operation costs caused by minimizing loads. The buildings applied with IDA were predicted to reduce whole-building energy use by more than 30% over the base case. Despite the addition of a number of energy efficient measure to the base case, the costs were predicted to increase by only 5%. The DA has a more pronounced effect on the cost-effectiveness of a building in severe Climates than in moderate climates. The present worth of total savings in severe climate (Minneapolis, Miami, and Phoenix), is approximately 35% larger than in moderate Climate (Sea/lea Los Angeles and Sacramento).
