Description
Summary:The goal of this thesis is to develop an efficient and
robust locally preconditioned multigrid algorithm for
the two-dimensional Euler equations using an up-wind
discrimination. Two multigrid coarsening strategies,
full-coarsening and semi-coarsening, are studied to
determine which is more efficient. In particular, we
employ a block Jacobi iterative scheme due to its
excellent high frequency damping ability and its
simplicity. In addition, the Turkel preconditioned is
introduced into the flux formulation to increase
accuracy and efficiency for low freestream Mach
numbers. A new technique to limit preconditioning
based on local information has been developed to
combat a stagnation point robustness problem.
Numerical tests performed on a NCA 0012 airfoil, a
bump flow, and a duct flow show semi-coarsening
requires O(N) operations and is overwhelmingly
superior to full-coarsening which requires O(N1)
operations. The new limiting technique for the
preconditioned appears efficient and robust, but more
tests are needed in the future to verify its
effectiveness.
