Summary:Twenty seven Quarter Horse mares in poor body condition (BCS < 4) were evenly assigned to either a 12 % fat-supplemented diet fed to increase weight (F), a control diet fed to increase weight (C), or a control diet fed to maintain weight (T). Expected foaling dates and mare ages were approximately equal across all treatments. Mares were maintained on these diets until d 50 of pregnancy. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC) and progesterone were measured to test the hypothesis that the fat-supplemented diet would increase serum cholesterol and progesterone concentrations in lactating mares in low body condition. The F mares had higher serum cholesterol levels within two weeks of treatment (P > .05) and maintained higher TC levels throughout the study. Diet had a significant effect on TC concentrations in mares of all ages (P = .0069) and mares > 10 yr. of age (P .0014),but diet had no affecton TC in mares<9yr(P=.2756). Diet had no affecton progesterone concentrations, interval to postpartum ovulation, or cycles to conception. The F mares had a greater number of days between parturition and conception than the C mares (P = .0 1 95), but there were no differences between F and T or C and T mares. There were no differences in growth between foals nursing T, F or C mares and there were no differences between growth rates of colts and fillies.
