| Summary: | The Texas Education Agency conducted a six-year longitudinal study beginning in 1990 on the outcomes of students with disabilities in Texas as they make the transition out of public school. This research is a secondary analysis of the data collected in the first three annual surveys of this study. A total of 376 youth responded to all three surveys. The purpose of the research was to investigate the relationship between selected student and program characteristics, and employment outcomes. The effect of gender and ethnicity was also investigated. The data were analyzed for the total sample of 376 youth representing all disabilities as well as for subsamples of 221 youth with learning disabilities, 30 youth with emotional disturbance, and 70 youth with mental retardation. Research questions were concerned with the employment outcomes two years after exiting high school, the relationship between the program characteristics and each employment outcomes, these relationships in terms of gender and ethnicity, and the contribution of each independent variable to each employment outcome. Descriptive data are given for demographic (age, gender, ethnicity) and schoolrelated information as well as employment outcomes (employment rate, hours worked per week, wage per hour, and annual income). Correlational, chi square, and bivariate and multiple regression analyses determined the relationship of selected school-related and demographic variables with employment outcomes. Only a few of the variables explained at least 10% of the variance in some of the employment outcomes. These included full-scale IQ, paid employment during high school, participation in community-based vocational instruction (CBVI) for the sample including all disabilities; and gender in the learning disabilities sample. Analysis of the data also showed that the relationships between high school experiences and employment outcomes were different for males and females as well as for Caucasian youth and minority youth. Possible reasons for these results are discussed. Recommendations for educational practice and future outcome studies are also provided. |
