| Summary: | Meeting due dates plays a very important role in maintaining a good position in a highly competitive market. The accurate setting of due dates is affected by many factors such as the characteristics of parts, the state of the shop in the moment of the new arrival, the structure of the shop, and the control policies used to schedule system resources. Particularly for Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), the interaction between the material handling system and workstations is one of the factors that most affects the time a part spends in the shop. The limited amount of buffer space characteristic to this type of systems further complicates the problem. Scheduling policies reported in the literature were generally developed focusing only on machine scheduling and without considering these two important factors. The research described in this dissertation proposes a parametric and dynamic rule to compute the due date for this type of system. This rule specifically addresses the material handling system and limited buffer space problems. The performance and robustness of the rule are empirically tested. This testing shows that the rule performs quit well against the existing due date setting rules. |
