| Summary: | There has been disparity in the way contemporary memory theories successfully use the environmental context as a central mechanism yet fail to account for the findings in the contextual reinstatement literature. To develop solutions that might bridge this gap, a reliable method is required that generates incidental contextual reinstatement effects in the laboratory. Such a method was used in three experiments involving over 300 subjects, reliably producing the contextual reinstatement effect for recall in both within-and between-subject designs. The present study examined the effect of item difficulty on cued recall rates in the contextual reinstatement paradigm and found that difficulty did not affect contextual reinstatement in the two within-subjects experiments, but did have an effect in the between-subjects experiment. Further, contemporary memory theories were used to generate predictions about cue additivity in recall. Based on the contextual mechanisms used by the theories, all predicted that recall rates in the item cues plus the context cues condition would be equal to or greater than the sum of the recall rates of the item cue only condition and the context cue only condition. Only the Outshining Principle predicted the results found in Experiments 2 and 3: context cues and item cues combine sub-additively in a recall paradigm. Other bridges between contemporary memory theories and the incidental contextual reinstatement literature are also proposed. |
